How to calculate GST

To add GST to a price: multiply the price by the rate and divide by 100. For ₹10,000 at 18%, GST is 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800, and the total is ₹11,800.

To take GST out of a price that already includes it: multiply the price by the rate and divide by (100 + rate). For ₹11,800 at 18%, GST is 11,800 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹1,800, and the value before tax is ₹10,000. A common mistake is to take 18% of ₹11,800, which gives ₹2,124 and is wrong.

To split the tax: if you and your customer are in the same state, half the GST is CGST and half is SGST (₹900 + ₹900 in the example). If the sale goes to another state, the full amount is IGST.

Milaan ERP does exactly this on every line of every bill, so your staff never have to work it out by hand.

Common mistakes

GST maths mistakes we see all the time

Small calculation errors that cause big headaches later.

  • Taking 18% of an inclusive price

GST on ₹11,800 is worked out as ₹2,124 instead of ₹1,800.

    Use rate ÷ (100 + rate)

For an inclusive price, divide by 118 (at 18%), not by 100.

  • Charging 18% CGST and 18% SGST

The full rate is charged twice on a local sale.

    Split the rate in half

For an 18% item: 9% CGST and 9% SGST.

  • Using old rates

Bills still use 12% or 28% for items that moved in September 2025.

    Update rates on items

Check your item rates against the current notification and update them once.

  • Rounding on the total only

Line-wise tax and the bill total don’t agree by a few paise.

    Consistent rounding

Choose line-wise or bill-wise rounding and use it on every bill.

Current GST rates

GST rates since 22 September 2025

After the 56th GST Council meeting, most goods and services moved to two main rates: 5% for everyday and essential items and 18% as the standard rate. The old 12% and 28% slabs were folded into these for most items. A special 40% rate applies to a short list of luxury and harmful goods, such as pan masala, cigarettes, aerated sugary drinks and large cars.

A few special rates remain, such as 3% on gold and silver and 0.25% on rough precious stones, and many basic items are nil-rated or exempt. Always check the rate for your item’s HSN code.

Need GST worked out on every bill?

Milaan ERP does these calculations automatically. Ask us for a quick demo.

How do I calculate GST on a price?

Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹10,000 at 18%, GST is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800.

How do I remove GST from a price that includes it?

Multiply the price by the rate and divide by (100 + rate). For ₹11,800 at 18%: 11,800 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹1,800 GST, so the value before tax is ₹10,000.

How is GST split into CGST and SGST?

For a sale within your state, the GST is split equally. At 18%, that is 9% CGST and 9% SGST. For a sale to another state, the full 18% is IGST.

What are the GST rates now?

Since 22 September 2025, most items are at 5% or 18%, with a 40% rate for a short list of luxury and harmful goods. Gold and silver are at 3%, and many basic items are nil-rated or exempt.

Are the 12% and 28% slabs gone?

For most goods and services, yes. Items earlier at 12% mostly moved to 5% or 18%, and most items at 28% moved to 18%, with some going to 40%.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. Use it as often as you like. No sign-up is needed.
