Why it matters

Your bill is a legal document and your shop window

Customers judge a business by its bill. A clear, well-laid-out invoice with your logo looks professional and gets paid faster. A messy one with handwritten corrections invites questions.

Under GST, a tax invoice also has rules. It must show your name, address and GSTIN, a unique serial number, the date, the customer’s details (and GSTIN if registered), HSN codes, quantities, values, the tax rate and amount for each tax, and, for inter-state sales, the place of supply. Goods invoices are made in three copies: original for the buyer, duplicate for the transporter and triplicate for you.

Milaan ERP’s formats include all of this from the start. Pick a layout, add your logo, bank details, UPI QR and terms, and every bill follows it. The right document is chosen for the situation: a tax invoice for taxable sales, a bill of supply for composition dealers or exempt goods, credit notes for returns, and delivery challans for goods moving without a sale.

Each format works on paper and as a PDF on WhatsApp or email.

Common problems

Invoice mistakes we see most often

Small format problems that cause real trouble.

  • Missing GSTIN or HSN

Hand-made or old formats leave out fields the law requires.

    All fields built in

Every format includes the required GST fields. You can’t remove them by mistake.

  • Wrong document type

A composition dealer prints a tax invoice and shows GST they can’t charge.

    Right document chosen

Composition dealers and exempt sales get a bill of supply automatically.

  • Thermal bills too cramped

Long item names and tax details don’t fit on a small receipt.

    Designed for small paper

Thermal formats wrap text and summarise tax cleanly on 3-inch and 2-inch rolls.

  • No copies for the transporter

Goods leave with only one copy of the invoice.

    Original, duplicate, triplicate

Print the required copies with the right label in one go.

What the law asks

What a GST tax invoice must contain

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists the contents of a tax invoice: supplier name, address and GSTIN; a serial number of up to 16 characters, unique for the year; date; recipient name and address, and GSTIN if registered; HSN or SAC; description; quantity and unit; total value; taxable value after discount; tax rate and amount for each tax; place of supply with state name for inter-state supplies; whether tax is on reverse charge; and a signature.

Composition dealers and sellers of exempt goods issue a bill of supply instead, without tax. For goods, invoices are made in triplicate. Milaan ERP’s formats follow these rules.

Tip: GST rules change from time to time. This page explains them in simple words; for advice on your own case, please speak to your CA.
