Your sales return, built as you bill

GSTR-1 reports that fill themselves in as you make bills

GSTR-1 is your monthly or quarterly statement of sales. Milaan ERP sorts every bill and note into the right GSTR-1 table as you work, builds the HSN and document summaries, and lets you export it all as JSON for the portal or Excel for your CA.

What it is

GSTR-1 is your sales, sorted the way the law wants

GSTR-1 is the return in which you report your sales. It isn’t a single total. Bills to registered customers are listed one by one, so they can claim credit. Large inter-state bills to consumers are listed separately. Smaller consumer sales are grouped by state and rate. Credit and debit notes, exports, an HSN-wise summary and a summary of the documents you issued each have their own tables.

Sorting hundreds of bills into these tables by hand is slow and full of chances to go wrong. And because your customers’ GSTR-2B is built from your GSTR-1, a mistake here becomes their problem too.

Milaan ERP sorts every bill into the right table as you save it. The customer’s GSTIN, the place of supply and the bill value decide where it goes. Credit notes are linked to their original bills. The HSN summary is built from your item codes, and the document summary from your bill series.

At month end, check the summary, export, and file.

Common problems

Where GSTR-1 goes wrong, and how we prevent it

These are the GSTR-1 errors that cause the most trouble for businesses and their customers.

  • B2B bill reported as B2C

A registered customer’s GSTIN is missing, so they lose their credit.

    GSTIN decides the table

Bills with a valid customer GSTIN always go to B2B. Missing GSTINs are flagged.

  • Wrong B2C large limit

Inter-state consumer bills above ₹1 lakh are grouped instead of listed.

    Current limit applied

Inter-state B2C bills above ₹1 lakh are listed individually, as now required.

  • HSN summary doesn’t add up

The HSN table totals don’t match the rest of the return.

    Built from the same bills

The HSN summary comes from the same bills as every other table, so totals agree.

  • Notes not linked

Credit notes are reported without the original invoice details.

    Notes linked to bills

Every credit or debit note carries its original invoice number and date.

How it works

From bill to GSTR-1

What happens to each bill on its way into your return.

  1. Bill saved Every day

You make a bill. Its customer GSTIN, place of supply and value decide which GSTR-1 table it belongs to.

  2. Notes linked When needed

A return or price correction becomes a credit or debit note linked to the original bill.

  3. Checks run Month end

The software flags bills with missing GSTINs, wrong state codes or missing HSN codes.

  4. Export and file By the 11th

Export JSON for the portal or Excel for your CA. E-invoiced bills are already on the portal.

The rules in brief

GSTR-1 rules in plain words

Monthly filers file GSTR-1 by the 11th of the next month; QRMP filers file quarterly by the 13th after the quarter. B2B invoices are reported one by one. Since August 2024, inter-state B2C invoices above ₹1 lakh (earlier ₹2.5 lakh) are reported individually in Table 5. Other B2C sales are grouped by state and rate in Table 7.

The HSN summary in Table 12 needs 4-digit HSN codes if your turnover is up to ₹5 crore and 6 digits above that, with B2B and B2C shown separately. If you need to correct a GSTR-1 after filing, GSTR-1A lets you amend it before filing GSTR-3B for the same period.

Tip: GST rules change from time to time. This page explains them in simple words; for advice on your own case, please speak to your CA.

Talk to our team

We’ll show you last month’s sales as a GSTR-1, table by table.

What is GSTR-1?

The return in which you report your sales: B2B invoices one by one, B2C sales by state and rate, notes, exports, and HSN and document summaries.

When is GSTR-1 due?

By the 11th of the next month for monthly filers, or by the 13th after the quarter for QRMP filers.

What counts as B2C large?

Inter-state sales to unregistered customers where the invoice value is above ₹1 lakh. These are reported invoice by invoice.

How many HSN digits do I need?

4 digits if your turnover is up to ₹5 crore, and 6 digits above that.

Can I correct GSTR-1 after filing?

Yes, through GSTR-1A, before you file GSTR-3B for the same period. Later corrections go into the next GSTR-1 as amendments.

Do e-invoices need to be uploaded again?

No. E-invoice details are auto-filled into GSTR-1 on the portal. Only the rest of your sales need uploading.

How much does Milaan ERP cost?
